The I Love My Natural Hair Collection was created to empower my sisters on their natural hair journeys. As we were growing up, many girls in my generation experienced trauma around our hair in different forms like being told that it needs to be managed, handled, tamed or some other version of this from our family members and close ones. Some of us were picked on by kids in school or simply received negative self images from television, music videos, the media overall, and advertisements. Also we were met with negative stereotypes/myths associated with our hair like it’s “not good hair”, it’s dirty because we don’t wash it as much, that our hair cannot grow past shoulder length, or that it is rough/coarse. All of these notions are far from the truth but can still lead us to have a negative outlook about our hair. If we are not conscious of it, we can pass on our internalized self hate to our children or the people closest to us.
I have coily textured hair, some might refer to it as 4c. Which if I might add, the grading system is problematic to begin with. We are taught subliminally and overtly that our hair is less than, that our hair is not the beauty standard. We are told how we can and cannot wear our hair in school settings and in the workplace. Many of our hairstyles were deemed as ghetto until worn and embraced by women of a lighter hue.
I created these affirmations because through all the negativity it's extremely important that we know how Magnificent and Gorgeous our curls are. We have been lied to create a disharmony between ourselves and our Glorious crowns. One of the ways I broke through this was by repeating Positive Affirmations daily. The truth is, our hair can be worn in literally every style that has been imagined! We Can Do It All, Have, and Will Continue to Innovate and Drive the Culture.
